Zanzibar or Mauritius: Which Indian Ocean Island Is Right for You?

Zanzibar and Mauritius are the two Indian Ocean islands most often shortlisted for an Africa beach holiday — especially as a finish to a safari. They share turquoise water and palm-lined beaches, but the character of each trip is quite different.

Choose Zanzibar for culture and character

Zanzibar mixes beach time with real depth: Stone Town's UNESCO-listed old quarter, spice farm visits, and a Swahili food culture shaped by centuries of Indian Ocean trade. Days out tend to be simple and water-based — snorkelling trips, dhow cruises at sunset, sandbank picnics.

It also pairs naturally with a Tanzanian safari: short flights connect the Serengeti and Arusha with the island, making bush-and-beach one easy itinerary.

Choose Mauritius for variety and ease

Mauritius is more polished and self-contained: a ring of resort beaches around an interior of volcanic peaks, waterfalls and tea estates. You can hike Le Morne Brabant in the morning and be back at the lagoon by lunch, and nowhere on the island is much more than 90 minutes away.

The lagoon-and-catamaran days are excellent, and the island suits travellers who want a mix of activities — hiking, golf, food — alongside the beach rather than beach alone.

Budget and feel

Broadly speaking, Zanzibar offers more range from simple guesthouses to high-end resorts, with a laid-back, slightly rustic feel. Mauritius leans toward polished resorts with high service levels. Neither is strictly cheaper — it depends on the style of trip you book.

The verdict

Finishing a safari, or want culture with your beach? Zanzibar. Want an easy, varied island week with hiking and boat days in one small package? Mauritius. Both are year-round destinations, so the rest of your itinerary can make the decision for you.
